Heroes and Villains
All my favorite books are filled with colorful characters. From humble but brave Sam Gamgee in Lord of the Rings to independent and curious Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, characters pull me into a story and make the world real.
When I started writing Secrets of the Super Moon, I found that my writing was naturally character-driven. The characters were driving the plot forward, and I was just along for the ride. Sometimes, I needed to take a step back and get to know my characters better to write the next chapter. As I wrote and re-wrote, I watched my characters grow into three-dimensional people. I knew that my character felt real when writing their dialogue became easy. I could hear their voice in my head like it was my own.
Secrets of the Super Moon has a big cast of characters. Although the reader follows Sofia the most closely, we get a glimpse into the different perspectives of other characters throughout the book. I’m excited to introduce a few of those characters now.
The Heroes aka The Power Hour Pals aka Three Best Friends
Sofia is the main character of Secrets of the Super Moon. She works hard to be a perfect daughter, straight A student, and good friend because she loves making her loved ones happy.
Allison has been best friends with Sofia for as long as she can remember. When she’s not reading a comic book, she’s drawing her own superheroes in her sketchbook.
Lo moved into town last year, but they became fast friends with Sofia and Allison. They are a natural athlete who spends most of the year in the swimming pool.
The Villains aka The School Bullies aka Two Best Friends and a Boyfriend
Sara is the most popular girl in school, and she knows it. She commands a terrifying group of friends who take turns harassing the uncool kids (everyone except them).
Naomi seems like a little princess, with her perfect hair, sweet smile, and shiny shoes. In 6th grade, she ditched her old friends to join the popular group, and she’s been Sara’s sidekick ever since.
Jessie isn’t sure why he’s the most popular boy in school, but it’s probably because he’s awesome. He loves to hang out with his friends and his pretty girlfriend Sara, even if she scares him sometimes.
